Am I Really Engaged?

I’m not going to pretend I had no idea about the proposal. There were several signs.

Jim and I have always openly discussed our future. We get so excited imagining our future home, decorating our living room, where to live abroad (just for maybe 2 years), what business ventures to explore together… It’s not a dead giveaway but I did notice the conversations about our future becoming more frequent. I would always joke about hating having to part ways every night. Cue the Beach Boys’ Wouldn’t It Be Nice.

Obviously marriage was in our not-so-far future. Then I heard about a diamond. Jim and I were driving home from the 7107 International Music Festival (February 23) when his mom called. Siyempre it was just the 2 of us in the car and I could hear everything his mom was saying. She was just reminding him of some errands to run and then she said in a very excited tone, “May nahanap na diamond si tita Fely. Gusto mong tignan?” and my heart skipped! He rushed to say “Mommy, mamaya na” and said goodbye as I looked out the window so he wouldn’t see my smiling face with matching wide eyes. I was SOOO happy it was really difficult not to smile like an idiot. I didn’t want to ruin his plans.

Our first night in Japan

The next clue I got was from MY mom. Hahaha!! It’s a long story but Maxx and I had a silly misunderstanding and didn’t talk for a WHOLE WEEK which was like a lifetime for BFFs like us. Then we finally HAD to see each other at a meeting. We talked and figured out that we totally misunderstood each other so we made up. When Maxx went to the bathroom, my mom asked me, “So is this why Jim wanted to have dinner with me and Maxx? To try and fix your fight?” and I was so weirded out and said I don’t know but I was pretty sure he was going to ask for my hand in marriage. I kind of freaked out when I realized my mom could totally say no to the idea of us getting married.

Gundam at Diver City, Odaiba, Tokyo

I NEVER EVER go through Jim’s phone but when we order food for delivery we grab the nearest phone. I really wanted to kick myself for getting his phone and his inbox was onscreen. His mom’s message read “Did Pia reply na?” ANO BA YAN!! Hahaha! By this time I had super mixed feelings already because though I was very excited to get married, I also felt guilty that I already knew.

I guessed it would happen in Japan because… Duh, why wouldn’t you propose in Japan? Haha! So whenever I told Jim, “I’m so excited for Japan!!!” he didn’t know I was secretly telling him, “YES I WILL MARRY YOU!”

On the second day of our Japan trip, we passed by a coffee shop and it was too full to seat our group of 9. We had to get separate tables so Jim and I coincidentally got a little privacy. As we were half-joking about someday living in Japan for a few years, he started getting serious. He told me that he had spoken to his parents and my mom about the idea of us moving in together. He said that his very conservative mom got very upset and they hadn’t spoken for 2 weeks. My mom wasn’t happy with the idea either, according to Jim. All this information took me by surprise and I genuinely felt like a fool for thinking he was going to propose to me. But he was such a sweet heart and told me he was trying really hard to take our relationship to the next step. Sadly, he said he couldn’t offer me marriage because he was waiting to become financially stable. I couldn’t let him know how sad I was because he was thinking very rationally so I smiled, brushed it off and excused myself to use the bathroom. My tears started pouring faster than my heartbeat in the confines of the women’s bathroom. My chest was really hurting but I knew it wasn’t my heart breaking. I still knew I was with the best boyfriend ever. I got upset because I wondered if his whole story was to cover up my mom saying NO to our engagement. I wiped my tears quickly and thanked myself for using smudge-free eyeliner and waterproof mascara before heading back to our table. I gave Jim a quick peck on the cheek and told him I didn’t want to live together anyway before getting married so it’s no problem with me. I know, right? I’m such a wonderful girlfriend………… CHE!! Hahaha!

So nagpaka-Elsa na ako and I LET IT GO…

let it go

It wasn’t going to happen. Kebs na. The next day we traveled to one of the best parks in Tokyo — Ueno Park. It was so beautiful.

Walked around for a few hours and then it was time to go home. We all took photos before leaving.

Then Arkin started taking photos of Maxx and Chino by the Japanese sign (I have no clue what it says). He called Jim and I to take photos too because it was a nice place to take “couple” photos daw. Cute!!

As soon as we stood there to take photos, a strong breeze blew the cherry blossom petals on us! It was SO ROMANTIC. In hindsight, Jim told me he kept choking to ask me the entire trip because he kept waiting for the perfect time. The petal shower was the perfect sign according to him and that’s when he turned to me, held both my hands and started sort of stammering. Hehehe. I knew it was finally happening but I couldn’t believe it!!

He said “I’ve been waiting for the right moment to ask you…” I was already crying before he got down on one knee and brought something out from his pocket. I saw a silver Spiderman keychain (my favorite Marvel superhero) and my heart stopped. I was thinking OMG IS THIS NOT A MARRIAGE PROPOSAL?! I’M GONNA DIE hahaha and then I saw the ring attached to the keychain. That’s when he said “I love you. Will you marry me?” and of course I said YES!!

Look at how happy mom is!! But I still couldn’t believe it! I actually asked “are you sure?!” and as desperate as it may seem, I remember saying “thank you!” HAHAHA. It’s just my automatic response to anything that makes me happy. <3

Here I am hugging my mom <3 I am so happy and it means so much to me that we have her blessing. Thank you, mama!!

As you may have already guessed, Jim and his mom are totally fine. They have all been in on it and I can’t think of anybody luckier than me right now. Pang best actor ang performance ni Jim haha. He really tried to throw me off because he had a feeling that I knew about the proposal. Ang galing niya but also kinda cruel. Hahahaha!

Thank you so much for all your well wishes. I’m also thankful for being able to share this moment with you. I’ll be sure to let you know more about my journey down the aisle and into holy matrimony! I have so much more to tell you!!!

Ipanema’s Sole To Goal: Watch The FIFA World Cup LIVE!

I really enjoyed playing futsal (indoor soccer) in high school and college. I even had plans of training and joining the actual women’s football team in Ateneo. I enjoyed playing it but I wasn’t an exceptional player. Watching football players, both men and women, just really fascinated me. The precision of their kicks, their eye foot coordination. Strangely enough, I have never really been into the FIFA World Cup.

I do, however, see all the excited tweets of my friends and how affected they are by “their” teams winning or losing haha. I experienced TRYING to get into a pub in Makati 2 years ago to watch the games in the wee hours of the morning but the lines outside were just crazy!

So now I’m curious. For the rest of you who are actual die-hards of the World Cup, how about ditching the long lines in rowdy bars and actually going wild while watching your favorite team LIVE?!

Sole To Goal

Ipanema’s promo SOLE TO GOAL is giving you the chance to tour Brazil and watch the games! All you’ve got to do is buy a pair of Ipanema slippers, get a coupon code and input it in Ipanema’s Sole To Goal app on Facebook! What?! A pair of flip flops gets you a chance to be one of three winners of a 6-day and 5-night stay in Brazil?? Crazy, I know!

This is just perfect timing because I need to get a new pair of flip flops for the summer anyway! I should really start watching replays of the past World Cup games, too!!

P.S. Sobrang cute nito!!

Time’s New Romance

I just saw this kilig-inducing video of a couple making time for each other. After seeing this video, I wonder if it’s true that chivalry is really dead.

Gone are the days when boys actually had to ask a girl’s parents for permission to court her. No more standing outside a girl’s window and singing harana. Today, courtship usually happens when a boy and girl aren’t even together.

While the technique has drastically changed over the years, the barriers have also been broken. Maria Claras no longer need to hide their smiles under their paper fans. The modern Marias are free to let their men know how much they are loved.

While it’s more than okay to go back to our ancestors’ romantiko moves, I think it’s very useful to understand your partner and his/her needs. My boyfriend Jim introduced me to the concept of The Five Love Languages. The usual cause of arguments between a couple is misunderstanding. I admit I used to get a little hurt when my boyfriend wouldn’t do the same things I would do to show my love but once I understood his love language, we have been the happiest!

There are five love languages according to relationship counselor Gary Chapman:

  1. Gifts
  2. Quality Time
  3. Words of Affirmation
  4. Acts of Service
  5. Physical Touch

I do simple things that make Jim happy like getting dropped off at his office after work so we can brave rush hour together and he won’t be alone (we call this Crush Hour). Just the other day while shopping for my Japan trip I saw a cute pair of pajamas and remember Jim saying he wished he had a good pair of jammies so I got it for him and left it on his couch. When he got home I got several heart emoticons via text because he was so surprised and touched. It may be the simplest things but it makes a world’s difference when you know what your partner wants.

It won’t come naturally if your love languages differ but that’s where romance kicks in. The effort into finding out how best to make your partner feel loved and proving it is very rewarding.

It’s a different time and age for love but ultimately we are freer to do whatever we want and that is the challenge. Are you up for it? Just always remember that romance and love don’t require each other but they are both crucial to a happy relationship <3 <3

P.S. I actually wrote this 2 days before Jim and I got engaged!! Thank you for all your kind words of support. It means so much to me. So many of you are what I call “lurkers” and don’t ever comment but the day I got engaged I was so surprised at the number of people who have been reading my blog for years (some since the beginning of time haha) sending me messages of elation. I will share my journey with you guys, I promise!! The engagement story will be saved for another blog post. Hehe. To be continued! <3

To Read/Watch: The Giver

I’ve heard plenty of good reviews about Lois Lowry’s children’s book The Giver (1993) but I still haven’t gotten around to reading it! I must admit that as a kid, this cover just did not appeal to me

the giver

Haha! Sorry!! I thought it was some boring pa-deep kind of book that I just didn’t want to read. But I heard that Suzanne Collins’ hit trilogy The Hunger Games is very reminiscent of The Giver aside from the Battle Royale comparisons. I grew curious but I still put a lot of books ahead of The Giver.

The first trailer of The Giver just came out.

In a seemingly perfect community, without war, pain, suffering, differences or choice, a young boy is chosen to learn from an elderly man about the true pain and pleasure of the “real” world.

Yes, yes, it looks awesome. But more importantly, who was that cutie?! The name is Brenton Thwaites

brenton thwaites

Taylor Swift is also in the movie if you pause somewhere near the 0:44 mark where there’s a super fast montage. Don’t look for blonde hair! Anyway, I can’t keep track of who her current boyfriend is but I researched and saw that she was rumored to be dating Brenton Thwaites around September of last year!

And just for laughs, look at what I found. Very totoy Brandon Boyd vibes hahaha. Is that even the same guy? Sorry – sloppy Google skills.

And can we discuss the saddest thing about the trailer? STARRING: Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep and Brendon Thwaites. Sobrang na-waley si Katie Holmes?! Hahaha but it’s alright sweet Joey Potter, there are no small roles. Looking forward to watching this! Maybe I’ll read it before it comes out! Have you guys read this book?

EDIT: He also plays Prince Phillip in the coming Maleficent movie! Look at this photo of him with Elle Fanning who plays Princess Aurora

Samsung ATIV for An Active Lifestyle!

From being a working student to a working girl, my need for a portable user-friendly laptop remains the same. I’m fortunate enough to have a job that sends me to so many different locations and it’s important for me to still be able to connect with my readers wherever I am. As I check it out, I’m inside a tent at a school in Laguna taping for a TV show!

Thanks to Samsung for letting me test out their ATIV Book 9 Lite! ATIV backwards is VITA, meaning LIFE and that’s what Samsung’s all about – creating life companions!

Samsung ATIV

It’s my first time to use Windows 8 and what’s even better is that I get to experience it on a laptop with a touch-screen!! My first time to try a touch-screen laptop as well!

A-mahhhhzing! Excuse the annoying duck face, I couldn’t help it. Haha.

Samsung ATIV

It’s got so many new features that admittedly overwhelmed me at first. Swiping my finger from the right side of the screen magically summons a tool bar that lets me search, share, bring me back to the start page and more. I got the hang of it after w while and ang saya lang mag-explore ng bagong operating system especially because it’s a touch-screen. I can’t say it enough, nakakamangha yung touch-screen talaga. Hahaha! Very Minority Report ang peg!!

There are a lot more swiping formulas that increase productivity because of the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite’s lightning fast performance!

Samsung merged style with sensibility when they designed it to be super slim at 16.9 mm and lightweight at 1.44kg making it the perfect go-everywhere companion.

HELLO, ME! I want to start making video blogs again. Haha!

Samsung ATIV

It’s also got Samsung SideSync which lets you see your Galaxy smartphone’s screen on your ATIV PC for seamless file transferring! Para ma-transfer yung hundreds of selfies mo to your laptop. Uyy, wag nang mag-deny I’m sure more than hundreds pa yan!! Haha! It’s got brilliant multi-tasking prowess. One of the many swiping chorvas lets you switch from one app to another. Perfect for multi-taskers like me!!

It includes a Solid State Drive (SSD) of 128GB! One of the reasons an SSD is better than a usual hard drive is because it’s designed to handle shock, vibration, and temperature extremes so you can take it anywhere you go!

Samsung ATIV

Whether you’re a hard-working student who needs a durable laptop for late-night deadlines or an on-the-go explorer like myself, if you’re in the market for a new laptop, make sure to check out the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite!
